Concern for a friend’s happiness prompted some deep thoughts on the subject and resulted in my first ‘100 Words of Happiness’ list.
Writing that list changed my life.
We constantly look ahead, striving to get ‘there’ at the expense of being here; believing if we could only achieve our goals, happiness will follow.
What I’ve come to believe is that happiness is a way of being. A habit that can be largely cultivated, although I’m not suggesting mental health issues can be ‘fixed’ by fixating on happiness. What I am suggesting is that happiness is rarely found at the end of a list of things to accumulate and do, and that few of us even take the time to really consider what truly makes us happy.
When I did just this, I was stunned by the simplicity of my answers. And whilst I still want to do All The Things with my life, these days rather than looking so far ahead, I pay attention to where I am right now; I focus on being present.
This is my updated ‘100 Words of Happiness’. As before, there’s no specific reason for selecting 100 words, the number simply felt right. Some of my choices may not make sense to you and they’re still in no particular order.
I found it fascinating to see what makes me happy now, compared to 2015. You can see my original list here.
